October 3, 2026, AFRMA display at the Twilight Tails event at the Hidden Valley Nature Center, Riverside, CA.

Welcome to the Twilight Tails event at the Hidden Valley Nature Center, Riverside, CA. The bat mascot was there to greet visitors.

We were having a heat wave so even though it was in the late afternoon, it was still hot outside. Inside the air-conditioned Nature Center is Kat Kohn (who brought mice) and Esther Kinzer helping with the AFRMA display.

Being disturbed from their nap in their rat pile were these female 11-week-old Silver Cinnamons, a Cinnamon, a Silver Mink, and a 10-month-old Pearl. The young females are all in the middle of moulting. Rats owned and bred by Karen Robbins, Karen’s Kritters.

Inside the room was a moth display. Adult moths lack mouthparts and cannot eat or drink so have a very short lifespan.

The is a very large female Atlas moth.

A large male Spanish Moon moth with its distinctive broad, feathery, comb-shaped antennae and longer tails than the females.

This yellow specimen is of a large male Comet moth a.k.a. Madagascan Moon moth with its extremely long, ribbon-like tails.

At another table inside were displays of beetles.

The omnivorous Pinacate beetles.

There were only 3 booths outside under the new shade structure along with the face painting.

The Indigeneous Education For All had 2 tables for their display; this one showed off some jewelry.

The Riverside County Library System with their traveling display van.

Next to the walkway was Sela the rock snake (rocks painted and arranged in a snake pattern).

Outdoor activities included bean bag toss/corn hole and ring toss. The Cal Fire truck, Riverside County Library System van, and Kona Ice truck were in the driveway.

Inside activities for the kids included an owl pellet dissection and identification kit. This was a favorite among the kids.

The Owl Pellet Dissection and Identification Kit had a bone sorting guide on the table for the kids to ID the bones they found.

The Paint-the-bat necklace activity for kids.

The Kidz Corner Play Dough Pellet where kids could go through a play dough owl pellet and look for items.

Nap time is over and now it’s time to exercise. The Blue Long Hair female mouse GSP Ashes on the treadmill, owned and bred by Katherine Kohn, Gray Scale Pets.

One of the tables inside had a display of damaged items found in the wildlife area caused by the Bain fire in May, including a melted top part of a glass bottle.
