Rescue Questions

The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association is not a rescue organization. Contact a rodent rescue near you. Many organizations will not take in “owner turn-ins” and will only take animals surrendered to the local humane society/animal shelter. To find a rescue check the AFRMA Directory, one of the clubs on the Links page, or do a search on the Internet.

Veterinarian Questions

Contact your local veterinarian for any illness questions.

Good books to keep on hand are:

Wild Rats and Mice

The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association does not take in wild rats or mice. Contact your local vector control.

For orphan wild rats or mice, visit our Orphan page on how to care for them. For release, they must be taken FAR, FAR, FAR away from where you live or they will return. For those that take in orphan wild rodents, there is the possibility of them having parasites or diseases that can be harmful or fatal to other pet rodents or humans. Care must be taken when dealing with them.
