Archaeologists have discovered in a cave in East Timor,
southeast Asia, the biggest rat that ever lived. This rat
weighed approximately 6kg (13.2 pounds) and lived 1000
to 2000 years ago. The cave where this biggest rat was
found held a total of 13 species of rodents, 11 of which are
new to science, and 8 of those weighed a kilogram (2.2
pounds) or more. Of those found, only one of the smaller
species is known to still survive.
